2008 APSA JURY SCREENINGS
In 2008, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards will once again provide a cinema in which the international jury members can view nominated films.
With screenings taking place over a five-day period, it is important that jury members are able to view films within a professional environment, whilst also enjoying the convenience and comfort of their accommodation at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort and Spa.
Emphasis is placed on a state-of-the art technical set-up with the comfort and practicality for each jury member top-of-mind. Theirs is a difficult task, and for the success of the screening process it is vitally important that the cinema provides a personal and connected experience for each jury member.
GO Productions’ John Mobbs has again been engaged to create a cinema environment, which will be purpose-built within a large meeting room at the Marriott.

PROPOSED VENUE SET UP & TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
- Barco HD8 projector carrying a full HD DLP chipset as the projection unit, configured in a rear projection format onto a Stumpfl 12’ x 6.75’ screen.
- Masking for the screen from the Stumpfl drape and valance kit.
- Black velvet run-off drapes for screen and side walls.
- All drapes are uplit using a series of floor mounted fixtures, patched into a dimmer control, and fitted with a deep red gel to provide a warm room ambience immediately before and after each film is screened.
- Films are supplied on DigiBeta tape.
- Two Sony J3 multi-format DigiBeta decks for playback, with a Denon Pro V310 backup.
- Input and switching from playback devices handled by a Barco ScreenPro II HD to provide precise configuration of any supplied film ratios. This will allow instant recall of programmed settings so that exact ratios are retained when projecting on to a wide format screen.
- To preserve absolute signal integrity between playback output and projector, DVI Optical Fibre cable will be used as it is inherently impervious to any electro-magnetic interference.
- DigiBeta tape carries a total of four discrete channels of audio and does not support any surround encoding. Therefore a Yamaha digital audio console will be used to control all the audio reproduction for the cinema. Similar to the video signal setup, this will provide for the pre-programming and instant recall of the finite number of ways the four channels of audio can be assigned on tape.
- For films that are provided with stereo channels only, a combination of phasing and delay digital signal processing will be used to create a cinematic surround feel.
- A series of Turbosound Nu Q12’s and TQ 308’s will be installed for front and rear audio channels.
- A pair of Turbosound B18 subwoofers will be positioned behind the screen.
- Lab Gruppen amplification will drive all speakers for maximum clarity, presence, and impact throughout the screening process.
- Purpose-built cinema seats with high backs, arm rests and cup-holders will be provided.
- Small coffee tables are positioned between each chair.
