Batara Goempar is an award-winning Indonesian cinematographer with over a decade of experience shaping visuals for both feature films and commercial projects. A graduate of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (Bachelor of Arts, Cinematography, class of 2009), he began his filmmaking career in 2005 and has since become a leading light in Indonesia’s dynamic film landscape.
Over the past 10 years, Batara has collaborated with renowned directors such as Kamila Andini, Garin Nugroho, Timo Tjahjanto, Lucky Kuswandi, and Edwin, contributing to a creative diversity that spans drama, horror, action, and period storytelling.
His filmography includes: Before, Now & Then (2022) by Kamila Andini (Main Competition Berlinale IFF 2022), which earned him the Citra Award for Best Cinematography at the 2022 Indonesian Film Festival, as well as nominations at the Asian Film Awards and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards; Samsara (2024) by Garin Nugroho, winning Best Cinematography at the 2024 Festival Film Indonesia; The Big 4 (2023) and May the Devil Take You (2018), showcasing his ability to craft mood and movement in genre; and Posesif (2017), a critically acclaimed psychological drama nominated for multiple Citra Awards.
