Albert Serra was born in Banyoles (Girona) in 1975. He is a film director, screenwriter, and producer whose work has gained international recognition for its radical approach to cinematic language and form. He graduated from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Hispanic Philology, Literary Theory, and Comparative Literature, disciplines that have deeply influenced his intellectual and artistic vision.

Over the past two decades, his films have been consistently selected in the Official Sections of major festivals such as Cannes, Locarno, and San Sebastián, where he has received some of their highest distinctions. Works like Story of My Death (2013), Pacifiction (2022) and Afternoons of Solitude (2024), have marked key milestones in his career, reinforcing his presence at the forefront of contemporary auteur cinema and consolidating his reputation among the most distinctive voices in European film today. His upcoming feature film, Out of This World, is set for release in 2026.

In parallel to his feature films, Serra has developed ambitious projects for leading international art institutions, presenting large-scale installations and long-duration works at venues such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and BOZAR. These include The Three Little Pigs, Singularity, Personalien, Roi Soleil, and Tauromaquia.

His work has been featured in leading museums, cinematheques, and international film institutions worldwide, where it has been the subject of curated retrospectives and in-depth programmes. He has received distinctions such as the LUMA Award, the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize, and inclusion in Cinema Scope’s “Best 50 Under 50” .

A frequent speaker at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, CalArts, and leading art institutions, Serra writes regularly on cinema, art, and literature, and has co-authored critical works such as his shot-by-shot study of Honor of the Knights. His work, developed in collaboration with producer Montse Triola through Andergraun Films, continues to challenge the limits of image and contemporary filmmaking.
