Fran Borgia is a Spanish-born filmmaker, researcher, and educator based between Singapore and New Zealand, where he is pursuing a PhD in Poetic Cinema. He is the founder of Akanga Film Asia, a Singapore-based independent film production company, and is widely regarded as one of the most prolific producers in Asian independent cinema.

His producing credits include acclaimed films such as Lav Diaz’s A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (Berlinale Silver Bear, 2016), K. Rajagopal’s A Yellow Bird (Cannes Critics’ Week, 2016), Boo Junfeng’s Apprentice (Cannes Un Certain Regard, 2016), Yeo Siew Hua’s A Land Imagined (Locarno Golden Leopard, 2018), Kamila Andini’s Yuni (Toronto Platform Prize, 2021), Jow Zhi Wei’s Tomorrow Is a Long Time (Berlinale Generation, 2023), Amanda Nell Eu’s Tiger Stripes (Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize, 2023), Chia Chee Sum’s Oasis of Now (Berlinale Forum, 2024), Yeo Siew Hua’s Stranger Eyes (Venice Competition, 2024), Rima Das’ Village Rockstars 2 (Busan Jiseok Award, 2024), Chie Hayakawa’s Renoir (Cannes Competition, 2025), and Tan Siyou’s Amoeba (Toronto Discovery, 2025).
