Yoon Sung-hyun majored in film directing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and followed his study at the Korea Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). His short film Children (2008) received the Special Jury Award from the Jeonju International Film Festival, and his other short films Drink and Confess (2009) and Daytrip (2008) were invited to Indieforum at the Jeonju International Film Festival, and the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Bleak Night (2010) is the fruit of his work from his production research course at KAFA and is his first feature film. Bleak Night generated much attention when it had its world premiere in the New Currents section at the Pusan International Film Festival and won the top prize – New Currents Award.
