Kore-eda Hirokazu is one of Japan’s most highly regarded auteurs. His directorial debut Maborosi (1995) won the 52nd Venice International Film Festival’s Golden Osella Prize. I Wish (2011) won San Sebastián International Film Festival’s Best Screenplay Award and was nominated for Best Children’s Feature Film at APSA in 2012. Like Father, Like Son (2013) competed at Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d’Or and was awarded the Jury Prize. It later received two APSA nominations for Best Feature Film and Achievement in Directing. The Third Murder once again saw Kore-eda nominated for duel APSAs. In 2018, Shoplifters was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and is nominated for three APSAs.
