Yusuf is quiet and reserved, keeping to himself and preferring to be left alone with his pet pigeons, his lone connection to his late father. Yusuf tends to the birds day and night, housing them in coops on the rooftop of the home in the slums of Adama where he lives with his brothers and sister. Yusuf also sleeps on the roof where he pays particular attention to his favourite, Maverdi, an outcast from the other pigeons. When his brother demands he get a job, Yusuf is sent away on a days-long journey. In fear of his pigeons’ safety, he must make his way back to Adama.
