Sixth generation Chinese helmer Wang Quan’an was born in Yan’an, China in 1965. He was drawn to the visual arts throughout childhood and in 1977 he left school to become a dancer in a chorus. He traveled widely to many countries in the 1980s before deciding to pursue filmmaking and was accepted into the prestigious Beijing Film Academy. He graduated in 1991 and was assigned to Xi’an Film Corporation as director. His directorial debut, Lunar Eclipse, won the FIPRESCI Award at the 22nd Moscow Film Festival. He was awarded the prestigious Golden Bear at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival for his film, Tuya’s Marriage and in Berlin this year, the coveted Silver Bear for Best Script for Apart Together. Weaving Girl was awarded both the FIPRESCI Prize and the Special Jury Grand Prix at the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival.

We recognise the integral role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and First Nations peoples continue to play in storytelling and celebration spaces.
