Famous for his stage roles, comic performances and poetry, Shide Nyima is a household name in Tibetan popular culture. Wherever he walks, fans follow him. Tharlo is his first lead role in a feature film, and in agreeing to the role, for the sake and love of art, he committed to cutting his hair which he had been growing for seventeen years. Tharlo premiered at this year’s 72nd Venice Film Festival where it was nominated for the Venice Horizons Award. The film also received four nominations for the prestigious Golden Horse Awards including Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and Best Director for Pema Tseden.

We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners of country, including the custodial communities on whose land works are created and celebrated by the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. We acknowledge the continuing connection to land, waters and communities. We also pay our respects to Elders, past and emerging. We recognise the integral role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and First Nations peoples continue to play in storytelling and celebration spaces.
