Known for his ‘obsession with light’, Lyu Songye was born and raised in Hulun Buir, China. He graduated from St Petersburg State University of Film and Television in 2008, having majored in cinematography and since 2010 has taught cinematography at China’s Hulunbeier University. Lyu lensed Director Pema Tseden’s much acclaimed black and white feature Tharlo (2015), which premiered in competition in Venice’s Horizons section and garnered four nominations at the 52nd Golden Horse Awards including Best Cinematography for Lyu. Lyu is an APSA Academy Member and was awarded a Special Mention for Achievement in Cinematography for Tharlo. He also lensed the 2017 APSA Best Youth Feature Film nominee, The Summer is Gone.
