Japan's A Silent Voice, your name. Receive Animation Nominations

Programming Director of Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) Yoshi Yatabe has been selected for the prestigious International Jury for the 11th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). Two films from Japan have been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film – A Silent Voice and your name.

The five-member Jury of acclaimed film practitioners from the region will be headed by Jury President Australian film editor Jill Bilcock ASE ACE and the other jurors are Chinese actress He Saifei, Filipino writer/director Adolfo Alix Jr and Kazakh writer, director and cinematographer Adilkhan Yerzhanov.

Now in his 11th year as Programming Director for the International Competition section of TIFF, Yatabe spent five years overseeing the Programming Division and serving as Programming Director for the Japanese Independent Film section. Yatabe is an experienced producer and distributor and in 2015 he produced the documentary Dryads in a Snow Valley directed by Shigeru Kobayashi. Among the film juries he has served on the jury are Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s “East of the West” section, the Art Encouragement Prize given by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs, the Nomination Committee of the Asian Film Awards, and for the Mainichi Film Awards.

Chair of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and its Academy Michael Hawkins said “APSA is delighted to announce Jill Bilcock as the President of the International Jury and Yoshi Yatabe as a member of the APSA 2017 International Jury. It will be an honour to have these two leading Industry figures form such a key part of the 11th APSA.”

Japan has a strong history at APSA, with films and filmmakers from Japan winning twelve Asia Pacific Screen Awards over the course of the event’s history. Wins have been had across many award categories including: Best Performance by an Actress (Kirin Kiki for An), Best Performance by An Actor (Masahiro Motoki for Okuribito), the Jury Grand Prize (Shinobu Terajima for Caterpillar), Best Documentary Feature Film (I Was Worth 50 Sheep), Best Screenplay (Satoshi Takata, Hideyuki Okamoto, Tadashi Nohara, Hatano Koubou for Happy Hour), and the FIAPF Award (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Isao Matsuoka) and a High Commendation for Best Documentary Feature Film (Planet of Snail). The Best Animated Feature Film award has been won no less than four times by Japanese productions (5 Centimetres per Second, Momo e no Tegami, Kaguya-hime no Monogatari, Sarusuberi: Miss Hokusai).

The APSA International Jury determines the winners of Best Feature Film, Achievement in Directing, Achievement in Cinematography, Best Screenplay and two acting categories, Best Performance by the Actress and Actor. They will also determine the winner in the prestigious Cultural Diversity Award, under the patronage of UNESCO and awards a Jury Grand Prize. Nominations in these categories will be announced on Friday 13 October.

The APSA International Youth Animation and Documentary Jury for 2017 will be chaired the internationally acclaimed filmmaker and APSA Academy member Haifaa Al Mansour (Wadjda, Mary Shelley) who will be joined by Melanie Coombs, the Australian producer behind Academy Award® winner Harvie Krumpet and APSA Best Animated Feature Film winner Mary and Max, and renowned British producer Steve Abbott (A Fish Called Wanda, Brassed Off) representing APSA’s Academy Alliance with the European Film Academy (EFA). Nominations in these three categories have just been announced.

APSA BACKGROUND

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards, based in Brisbane, is supported by Brisbane City Council and managed by economic development board Brisbane Marketing. APSA has the privilege of a unique collaboration with Paris-based UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations, and recognises and promotes cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region: comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people, and is responsible for half of the world’s film output.

Nominees and Jury are inducted into the Asia Pacific Screen Academy making them eligible to apply for the 2017 MPA APSA Academy Film Fund. The Fund was created to support, at script stage, new feature film projects originated by APSA Academy members and their colleagues across Asia Pacific. The fund awards four development grants of US$25,000 annually, and is wholly supported by the MPA (Motion Picture Association).

APSA and its Academy is committed to its ongoing collaborations with UNESCO, FIAPF, the European Film Academy (EFA), the Motion Picture Association (MPA), NETPAC (the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema), the Asia Pacific Screen Lab (APSL) and Griffith Film School.

Winners in the 11th Asia Pacific Screen Awards will be announced at the APSA Ceremony on Thursday 23 November at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

日本からは 「聲の形」と「君の名は。」が最優秀長編アニメ部門の選考候補作に決定

オーストラリア、ブリスベン:
本日、第11回アジア太平洋映画賞(APSA)の国際審査委員に、東京国際映画祭(TIFF)プログラミング・ディレクターの矢田部吉彦氏が選任されたと発表されました。 また、日本からは「聲の形」 と「君の名は。」の2作品が最優秀長編アニメ作品の候補にノミネートされました。

審査団は矢田部氏の他に、審査委員長を務めるオーストラリアの映画編集者 Jill Bilcock ASE ACE氏をはじめ、中国の女優 He Saifei氏、フィリピンの脚本家/監督 Adolfo Alix Jr 氏、カザフスタンの脚本家・監督・撮影監督 Adilkhan Yerzhanov氏と、アジア太平洋地域で活躍する著名な映画関係者5名の審査委員で構成されます。

TIFFコンペティション部門のプログラミング・ディレクターを務めて11年になる矢田部氏は、プログラミング部門の責任者および日本自主映画部門のプログラミング・ディレクターを5年間に及んで務めておられます。矢田部氏はプロデューサーおよび作品配給においても豊富な経験を有し、2015年ドキュメンタリー作品「風の波紋」(Dryads in a Snow Valley)(監督:小林 茂氏)」のプロデューサーでもあります。また、映画作品審査員としても、カルロヴィ・ヴァリ国際映画祭イースト・オブ・ウェスト コンペティション、文化庁の芸術祭奨励賞、アジア・フィルム・アワード、毎日映画コンクールにおいて活躍されています。

アジア太平洋映画賞会長およびアカデミー会員のマイケル・ホーキンズ氏は、「第11回アジア太平洋映画賞(APSA)の栄誉ある国際審査団の委員長にJill Bilcock氏、国際審査委員に矢田部吉彦氏をお迎えすることをお知らせいたします。映画界のリーダーであるお二人に極めて重要な役割を務めていただけることを光栄に存じます。」と述べました。

これまでAPSAにおいて、日本の映画界からの作品および製作者は合計12のアジア太平洋映画賞を受賞しており、非常に大きな影響をもたらしてきました。受賞歴は数多くの部門にわたっています:最優秀女優賞(「あん」の樹木希林氏)、最優秀男優賞(「おくりびと」の本木雅弘氏)、審査員特別賞(「キャタピラー」の寺島しのぶ氏)、最優秀長編ドキュメンタリー映画賞(「かたつむりの惑星(Planet of Snail)」、「タリバンに売られた娘(I Was Worth 50 Sheep)」)、最優秀脚本賞(「ハッピーアワー」の高田聡氏、岡本英之氏、野原位氏、はたのこうぼう)、国際映画製作者連盟(FIAPF)賞(坂本龍一氏、松岡功氏)。 最優秀長編アニメ映画賞においては、日本の4作品が受賞しています(「秒速5センチメートル」、「ももへの手紙 」、「かぐや姫の物語」、「百日紅~Miss HOKUSAI~」)。

APSA国際審査団が最優秀長編映画賞、最優秀監督賞、最優秀撮影賞、最優秀脚本賞、最優秀男優賞および最優秀女優賞の受賞者を選考します。さらに、栄誉ある「文化的多様性を称えるユネスコ賞(Cultural Diversity Award)」および審査員特別賞の受賞者も選考も行い、各部門のノミネート者は10月13日金曜日に発表されます。

APSAについて

アジア太平洋映画賞(APSA)はブリスベンを拠点とし、ブリスベン市議会の後援を受け、経済開発庁「ブリスベン・マーケティング」によって運営されています。APSAはユネスコ(UNESCO)パリ本部および国際映画製作者連盟(FIAPF)との特別のコラボレーションで実現おり、70の国々と地域、人口45億人、世界の映画作品の約半数が製作され世界で最も急速に発展するアジア太平洋地域の映画界で、優秀な映画作品や文化的多様性を認識・促進しています。

ノミネート者および審査員はアカデミーの会員となり、2017年 MPA APSA アカデミー映画ファンドに応募することが可能になります。 この映画ファンドは、アジア太平洋地域のアカデミー会員およびその関係者が手掛ける新しい長編作品を脚本作成段階において支援することを目的に設立されています。MPA (映画協会)の後援により、毎年25,000米ドルの助成金が4名に提供されます。

APSAおよびそのアカデミーは、ユネスコ(UNESCO)、国際映画製作者連盟(FIAPF)、ヨーロッパ映画アカデミー(EFA)、映画協会(MPA)、NETPAC (アジア映画世界普及ネットワーク)、アジア太平洋スクリーン・ラボ (APSL)、グリフィス・フィルム・スクールとの継続的なコラボレーションに取り組んでいます。

第11回アジア太平洋映画賞の受賞者は、11月23日木曜日にブリスベン コンベンション & エキシビション センターで開催されるAPSA授賞式で発表および表彰されます。
